Darcel strolled slowly at Harlech’s side down the huge hallway. It was a slow tour of the vast array of buildings. The complex was arranged in a rough square, with a vast open courtyard in the middle. Looking out the windows, he could see small shoots of green beginning to show along the edges of the walls that faced south, a sign that spring was coming to this northern clime.
Far from being a strictly nomadic, primal people, the Uldan’s culture was rich and complex. They had no books, other than those Harlech had collected from raids, but created beautifully illustrated scrolls depicting their beliefs, their lives, their fantastical history brought to life. It made him feel guilty that he had ever assumed them to be ignorant barbarians. If anything, they were more civilized than his own people, at least in the ways they looked after all their citizens. Everyone was cared for, from the youngest to the oldest, and to do otherwise was sacrilege. That very respect, the adherence to the laws, was what had mired them in misery with their last tasan-un. Even now, Darcel knew Harlech was re-writing several laws to avoid just such an occurrence again, even though it could mean his downfall in the future.
Harlech did not seem to consider his position as tasan-un a personal one. He only saw it as a tool, a mantle of duty that must be handled with respect and used with passion and pride. His people were everything to him.
And his people revered him. Their awe and gratitude followed him everywhere. He was almost a god to them.
And they felt a certain reverence for Darcel as well, which gave him great anxiety. The idea that he was in some way their savior was ludicrous in the extreme. He’d had many an argument with Harlech about the matter. Well, Darcel argued, and Harlech smirked and watched him rant.
The man was hopeless. He was firm in his belief that Darcel would provide a solution to their problems, that he would find a way to deal with the Raisians and negotiate a way for the Uldan to cross through enemy territory and take up residence in the far Eastern Mountains.
